A michelada originally developed as a way to enjoy fresh lime juice and a dash of salt with beer, a common Mexican practice. A beer cocktail can include various savory ingredients such as Maggi or a soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce mixture, such as the concept of a basic beer cocktail evolved over the years. There is nearly as many Michelada beer cocktail recipes as there are bartenders nowadays. Use this simple recipe as a guide for creating your own.
Tips
- To replace the soy and Worcestershire sauces, sprinkle a few shakes of the Maggi liquid seasoning on top. Then add some Clamato juice to the mixture (clam broth and tomato juice with spices).
- Get rid of the salted rim on the glass. Make the cocktail itself a little saltier by mixing a small amount of salt in.
- If you want to end the purist phase for a while, try making your beer with just lime juice and salt. This variation in Mexico is called chelada.
