Simple, yet intriguing, the Chrysanthemum is unlike any brandy drink you have ever had. I recommend everyone to try it at least once because it has an interesting flavor. There is no doubt that this cocktail is not for everyone, even if it may surprise you and really tantalize your palate. It looks like the typical brandy martini, depending on the amount of vermouth used, though it is likely to use dry instead of sweet vermouth in the metropolitan. And yet, it’s when absinthe is injected into the mix that things really heat up. There is an undertone of anise in this drink that might not be seen in a drink with such a delicate name. If you are not used to absinthe, even a 1/4-ounce pour may be a little too much. There is a large amount of power to its flavor, which might be surprising to someone who is not used to it. Depending on how rich and clean you want this cocktail to be, you may want to adjust the amount of alcohol when making your next batch, or simply start with less instead.
Reminder
Since this drink is so clean and heavy on the alcohol, high-quality ingredients are essential. Be sure the vermouth and brandy are fresh before you upgrade them — and be sure they’re upgraded as well. Brandies, cognacs, and Armagnacs made in small batches are excellent candidates for use in this recipe. In spite of its design as a cocktail, the Chrysanthemum is a great drink to serve on the rocks. If you let the ice melt, the flavors will blend slightly and create a wonderful sipper that you can enjoy slowly.
